2010-2011 Varsity Cheerleaders

This summer the BHS Varsity Cheerleaders attended NCA Cheer Camp on South Padre Island. They did a outstanding job even though camp was cut short due to Hurricane Alex. The camp was only 2 days long instead of 4 however the girls learned all the material. The cheerleaders learned 4 dances, 4 cheers, many chants and a variety of stunts and jumps.

During cheer camp the girls are evaluated on routines that consists of an entrance, cheer and a chant. This year since camp was shortened they only had to perform one routine. They received 2 superior ribbons for their routine which is the top award a team can receive on a routine. Also during camp the captain and co captain of each team attend captain's class. While attending this class the girls must show leadership abilities and the qualities that make a great cheerleader. After completing the classes the NCA staff chooses one girl who showed great leadership abilities to receive a Leadership award. This year that award was given to the BHS Cheer Captain Rachel Ryza.

This year each member of the squad was nominated to tryout for the All-American Team. It is very unusual for an entire squad to be nominated to tryout for the All-American team. To become a member of the All-American team, each nominee must met a certain score which is based on motions, jumps, tumbling, voice, and spirit. This year there were three members of the BHS squad that made the team; Senior Rachel Ryza, Senior Eron Lee, and Freshman Raquel Wortham. NCA also honors 1 girl with the top All-American award. This girl is the cheerleader who received the highest score over all in her All-American tryout. The cheerleader who won that honor was Rachel Ryza. Rachel was also invited by the NCA staff to tryout to become a staff member for NCA. That is a great honor and accomplishment.

Because camp was cut in half there were no end of camp competitions however there was still an award ceremony on the last day of camp. The BHS Cheerleaders were awarded the Best Jumps award. The squad also won the NCA Spirit Award. This award is voted on by all the squads who attends camp and goes to the team that has shown the most genuine spirit throughout the entire camp. This was such an honor to receive knowing that it was chosen by a group of peers. Along with a megaphone trophy this award included a Gatorade cooler filled with powdered Gatorade.

The cheerleaders won 3 spirit sticks in 2 days and also received a bid to compete in the High School National Championship which will take place in Kentucky in January. The cheerleaders are adding this to a list of goals they would like to accomplish this school year.

Although the camp wasn't as long as originally planned, the BHS Cheer squad represented Bremond fabulously. They were respectful, kind, and full of the Tiger Spirit. They were complemented on their skills and behavior by the NCA staff and other cheer coaches. These girls have great attitudes and tremendous talent. They have some great plans for the upcoming school year and are looking forward to leading the crowds. Go Tigers!
